Finally got my DSLR camera last night. I had saved all my Christmas $, some Dave Ramsey Allowance, bonus $, and sold some tech stuff to get it. :) I got the Nikon I had been eye balling. It's a good entry level DSLR. Checked out and seriously considered buying a used one off Craig's list, but I'm glad I got a new one. No question on if it works and I have a year warranty.
The lens comes with a 5 year warranty. The kit lens it came with is ok, but not the best. My next thing will be saving up to buy some lenses. They can cost as much or more than the camera body. I had enough $$$ left over to order a camera bag and wireless remote from B&H. Should get here next week. The wireless remote will come in handy. Sometimes even shooting with a tripod...you get a slightly blurry image from pressing the button. This way, no shake at all and I can use it to do family portraits. Won't have to use the timer. :)
One photo trick that I love to see in photographer's work is depth of field. Above is an example I randomly found on the web. Not the best...but love to see it used in wedding photos and portraits. The image that is the focal point is clear....the background is blurred. I was talking to a designer I work with at the office and he said that can be achieved by a lens with an Aperture of F/1.8-22. You can do it using Photoshop, too, but it doesn't look as good. So he suggested I get a lens like the 50mm f/1.8. It's a small lens but lets you take pics with great depth of field. I don't know a lot about it...and he was somewhat knowledgeable. I found an informative website that gives you tips about using a DSLR and understanding lenses and using the camera. www.dslrtips.com It talks about the 50mm lens. It's the closest to the human eye. I believe the Nikon and Canon kits both come with 55mm lenses. I found a good 50mm f/1.8 (great for portraits and gaining depth of field) at http://www.beachcamera.com/shop/product.aspx?sku=NK5018 . B&H in New York has a website as well for photography/video hobby junkies and professionals.
I'm looking forward to reading up on all this and saving up for some nice lenses and a good flash. This hobby could get pricey. :)
Most importantly, I want to be able to take great pictures of Courtney and Jaden. They will be awesome subjects to practice on and if I get good pics, they will make great gifts to print and give to family.
