I LOVE our DVR. I decided to record Freedom Writers the other night so I could watch it later. Not sure why...just thought it sounded like a good movie. It's kinda like any other movie that shows the progression from a group of people that go from unproductive slugs in the grass to productive members of society. I'd say it's like Sister Act...minus the singing or Dead Poet Society in the hood. In other words...this story line has been told before...in various different ways and environments. This is based on a true story...which is even better. To me this movie was a 10 as far as inspiring. I'll have to admit there were moments where I let a tear fall. Lame...but happens. The character's commitment to teaching is amazing. Unfortunately it costs her more than most people would pay in more than one aspect. The spirit of her character is admireable and it makes you think...if you're that determined...you can really change lives. Reminds me of servant leadership. Equiping and serving those you are responsible for so they can succeed.
I've had my teacher's license for awhile now and as each semester passes and I don't get that phone call to come interview for a high school program...I get a little antsier. I want to teach so bad that is not funny. I'm still scared to death. Teens can size you up and see right through you pretty quickly. What I do have going for me is that I really do care, so hopefully they will see that. I doubt I'll find myself in a situation like Hilary Swank's character. We have some rough schools around but nothing like that.
For the last 4 months, working at my job has been...obligation and less fun. I don't know why. I love what I do...but my feelings for teaching are pretty strong and it's hard not to feel miserable here. Obviously, I can't react to my feelings. I still go to work, do my job, and do it to the best of my ability. It's out of my control and with the economy the way it is, I doubt any schools will be opening a media/communications vocational program at their schools any time soon. Someone will have to retire or quit for me to get a job teaching. So...it's all in God's hand. Just trying to be patient.
I have had the opportunity to mentor students at summer camp using graphic design as a tool. I found the kids in my mentoring group would willingly skip recreation and swim time to learn more. A few months later a parent approached me saying their daughter had such a passion for graphic design and using it to minister and it started at camp. I had another parent say the same about his son a couple months ago. That was so awesome to me. It had nothing to do with me...it had to do with showing these kids an outlet for their talent and how they can use it to not only have a fulfilling career but use it to minister to people. Doing something you love is always better than doing a job you hate for the rest of your life. That only fueled the fire more for teaching. So....here's hoping...one day that position will open up. I'm ready.
