Mrs Oldham asked me to lead worship this Sunday. The piano player was out of the country for a mission trip so I asked if she minded if I lead and played the piano. It did make me a little nervous that everyone wasn't familiar with the songs I chose. HA! I for some reason thought they did but it all worked out. We went over the set a few times and everyone seemed comfortable.
Once worship began and I finished the last song, the Pastor came up to the podium and told the story behind Amazing Grace and asked me to lead all four verses. I'm not very versatile at the piano. I can play in certain keys and if I have a chart. So I was frantically flipping through my binder for Amazing Grace/My Chain Are Gone. It's an easy song and I'm sure goin' over it by myself I could have played it...but it made me nervous to not have that chart to fall back on. I found it, but the organ and the keyboard were playing it in F. I sing and play it in C. I can't transpose on the spot. So I didn't play but went a head and sang from the piano while they played. It was a really high key for me so I sang harmony and then the Pastor asked if we'd do that second part...which meant...My Chains Are Gone. I knew there was absolutely no way to sing that in the key we were singing in. I can't even think that high. So, I mouthed to another lady named Lisa to sing it. She tried and it was too high for her too. HA! So I did the only thing I could...I looked at the Pastor, right in the middle of what seemed like a sacred moment and said, "I hate to quench the Spirit here...but I can't sing it in this key." I saw a smile on his face and he said, "You aren't quenching the Spirit, just change keys." This very short conversation happening through the house system. HA! So everyone had to stop playing right in the middle of this and then I started playing it in C. UH!!! It was fine after that and I guess everyone just moved right past the complete momentum stop.
If this was the first time a moment like this had happened during worship, I probably would have been mortified. But...moments happen and I just try to find the humor in it. Jeff just laughed at me after church. We go so well together. Neither one of us take ourselves too seriously and always have things to laugh about regarding ourselves. :)
Friday night turned into Saturday at 5:30am. I worked on camp stuff till I got everything I could done. I did take a short Halo break Friday night. Alen Nope stayed the night with us because he's on of the camp directors. Jeff and him have been long time friends. He asked if I'd play, and of course...I had to be polite. He kicked my butt and I went back to workin'.
The directors meeting went well Saturday. Coffee and a tall caffeine drink kept me from feeling only the 3 hours of sleep. We covered a lot of stuff. I presented the new camp logo, the camp t shirts, the updated forms and Jeff handled the rest. The meeting went from 10am to mid afternoon. We got a lot accomplished. I am so excited about camp...which is nothing new. It's my favorite time of year and has been since I was 11.
Today after church, we had a meeting with the youth's parents and served soup for lunch. Jeff went over what he's been doing during his Wednesday night services since he started at Roberts. He's a spread sheet guy so it was all laid out on paper. He's teaching the youth what the words of Jesus mean to us and what it is to be a disciple of Jesus Christ. His goal is to lay a firm foundation so when they go to college and enter into the real world...they have something firm to stand on. We aren't so much into pumping them up into an emotional high. That doesn't last. It's important to teach them why they believe what they believe. I'm proud of him. He's doing a great job. It's not always easy but it's so worth it.
And now...I am going to crash and start another week. Goodnight.
