May Day Flood 2010

This has been...and being Mrs. Obvious here...a major disaster all around the area we live. Thankfully, our family has been unaffected. Angie and Walt's family experienced a day of power outages but that was all. We are very blessed. Of course, we live on a hill. I've complained about it many times during the winter...but I'm very thankful for it considering the recent flood.

This past weekend I was at TN Ladies Day...which is an annual Friday-Saturday event. Friday night was fine...but early morning Saturday...around 4am or so...the storms began. It woke me up with lightening and thunder. I knew they were predicted to be bad...and Centerville, Dickson is a hot bed for tornados. Needless to say...I didn't sleep well. The wind and rain were really hard. By mid morning...early afternoon...the creek was flooding.

During the last session of the retreat...our guest speakers from Recycled Women's ministries were speaking and the power went off. This didn't keep them from continuing to speak. They finished and those of us on the worship team sang unplugged. It was pretty cool. The atmosphere was very worshipful.

Bro. McKinley, our state overseer, asked that no one leave during the mid morning. The creeks were overflowing onto the roads and traveling was a danger. They accessed the roads several times and there was a small window of opportunity to leave late afternoon. I packed up and headed out along with a long line of other people. We went a long back way to get back to Dickson...which is ironic...because the camp ground it out in the sticks. So to go the back way...well...is humorous to me.

I took some pics during the week. Our office is located in Old Hickory right by the Cumberland river. The river about an eighth or quarter mile away from us...I'm guestimating. So for the river to reach our building was pretty serious. Here's a photo my supervisor, Nick, took when he came in last Sunday to check out the building. You can actually see the water up at the window...and it got even higher later on.

Traffic was horrible all week. Monday was hour and a half commute to work. Tuesday was two and a half hours. Vietnam Vets was under water around the Rivergate area. Wednesday and Thursday I stayed home sick. I had a fever, massive headache, body aches, chills, and congested chest and head. It was not fun. I'm back today.

They have torn out the carpet and removed the bottom of the dry wall in our office area. They have also sprayed everything with disinfectant to combat any mold or other bacterial growth I guess. That had me coughing up a lung until I could find a fan.

I'll post some pics I took around Old Hickory, Vietnam Vets, and Hendersonville later on.
